Brief Rules and Regulations

A school is a place that promotes responsibility, respect, civility and academic excellence in a safe learning and teaching environment.

Role of the parents

The primary right and duty to educate rest with the parents. In the home, more than any other place, parents teach by their example, reverence for God and respect for the dignity of others. They are also tremendously influential in cultivating among their children the virtues of love of neighbor, justice, generosity, loyalty, industry and honesty which are essential to their life. Parents play an important role in the education of their children and have a responsibility to support the efforts of school staff in maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment for all students. Parents fulfill this responsibility when they:

Show an active interest in their child's school work and progress;
Communicate regularly with the school;
Help their child be neat, appropriately dressed and prepared for school;
Ensure that their child attends school regularly and on time;
Promptly report to the school their child’s absence or late arrival;
Become familiar with the Code of Conduct and school rules;
Encourage and assist their child in following the rules of behavior;
Assist school staff in dealing with disciplinary issues.

School Schedule

Student should be in school by 8:40 AM. All children go directly to their classroom after a short assembly.
Under no circumstances may Maitri School accept responsibility for children left at the school before 8:30 AM.
Regular dismissal time is 3:00 PM. Students are accompanied to the Juniors Play Ground area by a teacher and parents are to wait at the west side gate to receive students. For safety and security no parent is to take a child from the dismissal line before reaching the play ground area.

Lateness

Students arriving after the normal time will receive a remark in the school diary.

After School (Dismissal)

Parents are responsible to pick up their children at dismissal time. In extraordinary circumstances, if a parent or guardian is unable to pick up a student, arrangements must be made with the Vice-Principal or Teacher in advance.
For your convenience, an After-School Program is available. Student must be enrolled for the month or the whole year if needed. Registration form for After-School Program can be obtained in the school office.

On stormy days, parents of Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten and 1st graders will be allowed to pick the student up from the classroom at 3:05 PM.

Attendance

Regularity of attendance and punctuality are important in the academic progress of the child and in His or Her character training.
The list shows some of the acceptable absences:
Sickness of a student
Sickness or death in the family
Impossible roads or weather which make travel unsafe
Religious Observance

All other absences are classified as unlawful detention on the part of the parent or truancy on part of the child. Removing the child from school for an extra vacation during school time should be given very serious consideration by the parents. Teachers are not able to anticipate absence nor can they practically make up work with the student and all students are held accountable for all missed work to pass a grade.
In all cases, the school office should be notified by the parent before 9:00 AM if a student is to be absent that day. Student absent without notifying will be considered truant and the proper authorities will be notified.
A written excuse in the school diary from the parent of an absent student must be presented to the teacher when the student returns to school. These become part of the attendance file.
No student may leave school during the school day unless accompanied by a parent or guardian who must report to the school office. In the case of a student's illness while in school, the school will call the telephone number listed on the school diary "Emergency Contact Number". If the nature of the emergency requires immediate medical attention, the principal or the teacher will call the Emergency Medical Service. If there are any changes on the "Emergency Contact Number" , the parent or guardian is responsible to notify the school in writing immediately.
The parent or guardian must sign the student out before the student leaves the building. This record will be kept on file and is considered a legal document.

Discipline

One of the most important aspects of education is discipline which should eventually be internalized. Discipline is the training that develops self-control, orderliness, efficiency and character.

Basic to all discipline is the principal of respect - respect for one's self, for others and for all students.
In order to form proper habits and attitudes, the following rules for good conduct are expected to be obeyed by every student:
1. Respect for all faculty members, other students and self.
2. Respect for all school property and school uniform.
3. Courtesy and consideration for all members of the school community.
4. Silence places and times designated for silence.
5. No chewing of gum in the building or on school grounds.
6. No student is allowed anywhere in the school building without supervision.
7. All students are expected to communicate in English.

Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken for failure to adhere to the above rules.

Dress Code

Wearing a uniform is a sign of identification with the school community of Maitri School. By wearing a uniform, students show pride in their school and exhibit respect for their person by dressing in a dignified manner. The uniform also helps to reduce competition in dress as a result of contemporary styles. Student should arrive at school and leave school in full uniform.

Boys Hair length may not exceed collar length. All hair must be kept clean and neat. Fad or engraved hairstyles are not permitted.
Jewelry is not permitted, except that girls may wear one pair of post earrings, no hoops or dangles.
Positively NO Make-Up or Nail-Polish is permitted during school hours.
School Shoes (oxford type) black is required. No sandals, clogs or loafers. Heels on shoes are not to be more than one inch in height.

· Uniforms are also required for sports classes.

· School on Sundays is a casual day. Students may wear any decent type of casual wear.

School Preparedness

All students are required to have their School diary with them daily. Both the ID and the School diary must be presented to any staff member upon request.
Students are expected to have a notebook, pens, pencils and textbooks with them daily.
Students are NOT permitted to wear hats, doo-rags, or head coverings in school at any time. THEY MAY BE CONFISCATED AND WILL ONLY BE RETURNED AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL TERM.
Students are NOT permitted to wear headphones, or carry a radio, CD player, walkie-talkie, beeper or cell phone at any time. These items will be confiscated as you enter the school and will be returned at the end of the school year. School is not responsible for lost cell phone, etc. Students will not be reimbursed.
Students may not carry matches, lighters or markers. These items will be confiscated and parents will be contacted. Do not bring sports or recreational equipment, such as balls, bats, rollerblades, skateboards or scooters to school.
Students must arrive dressed appropriately.

If you are required to use a cane or crutches, you must bring a doctor's note to verify the need and get principal's approval in writing.

Building Rules

Students are required to be in all classes listed on their School diary.
Students are to be in class at the sound of the Bell.
Students are not allowed to run in the school corridors and climb on the tables.

Entrance and exit procedures.

All students are required to leave the building at the end of their school day. Students are NOT allowed to linger in the building during lunch hours and after their last period.
The class captain must ensure that all the doors and windows are closed and all electrical goods are turned off before leaving the class room.

The following penalties will follow students that break the rules of the school:

Failure to comply with these regulations may lead to serious disciplinary action, including suspension. Please, follow these rules to insure that you can complete the school year and maximize your opportunities to succeed in school.

1st cut
Complain written in the School diary
2nd cut
Student will receive Saturday detention and parent will be notified
3rd cut
Student must bring in their parent/guardian for pre-suspension meeting
4th cut
Student will be given a principal’s suspension. Repeated offenders will face additional disciplinary measures.
